What better way to wind down after a crazy year of beats, bassbins and vibes than to have a year-end mix prepared for us by the one and only Gonzo, SYNDICATE’s unofficial favourite downtempo DJ! Slip this mix on, turn down the lights, turn up the bass and drift into dub bliss…

About Gonzo

adj. [ˈgän-(ˌ)zō]

1. idiosyncratically subjective but engagé
2. freewheeling or unconventional especially to the point of outrageousness
3. bizarre, weird, crazy, eccentric

Gonzo is all about discovering strange things that have been ignored and rediscovering old things that have been forgotten. A regular flea market enthusiast in all the countries he calls home (Mexico, France, Singapore to name only the last three), he looks for forgotten music, unknown films, discarded photos or abandoned furniture, and always manages to transform them into something appealing.

The SYNDICATE EP

SYNDICATE takes a step forward by dishing out our first release. The compilation EP features Cherry Chan, Kiat and Max Lane, with a special remix track by UK producer, Kidkanevil.

Within less than a year, we’ve made our mark as the most forward thinking night in Singapore with bass and beat assaults accompanied by radical visual installations. So from throwing monthly parties, conceptualising art shows and playing at festivals, the time has finally come to unleash the gems from the SYNDICATE studio.

The EP presents the production debut of our first lady, Cherry Chan. Fresh from her Red Bull Music Academy (RBMA) stint in London earlier this year, Cherry partners with Kiat for the catchy kling-klang that is Samurai Waltz. Fellow RBMA alumnus Kidkanevil takes the waltz for a spin with his own special remix.

Marking another first in this release is Max Lane’s inclusion into the Qilin stable. Widely known as SYNDICATE’s bounce-meister, Max Lane rumbles the bass within his signature head-nodding beatscapes in Wohub.

Qilin’s head honcho, Kiat, maintains the bass continuum for the compilation with Dark Insanity.

To sum it up, the EP serves as an in-studio extension of SYNDICATE ’s flight in presenting an engineered journey to shift the current perceptions of electronic dance music.

Max Lane’s western end crew, upp/circular, presents another round of podcast that marries his two collectives together. Kiat plays the special guest this time round as the two serve their staple of bouncy beats & rumbling bass.

Frog Beats

This little froggy greeted us at our Bali villa when we arrived. It was doing a welcome swim around the pool and with our noble intentions, we left it alone. Little did we know that it was actually trying to get out of the water.

We found Froggy flat on the pool floor when we got up the next morning. So here’s a beat in memory of Froggy.

Heavy bass maestro Darren Dubwise takes a leftfield turn and ventures on an LA beats adventure for our SYNDICATE 11 promo mix. Featuring beats from the likes of Nosaj Thing, Free The Robots and The Glitch Mob, this promo mixtape is a musical primer for SYNDICATE’s double cities tour on the 12th & 13th November 2010.

Mark your diaries and expect no less than a mind-bending audiovisual experience alongside residents from SYNDICATE & Low End Theory. Check who’s lined-up for both gigs after the cut.

As we changed the look for our online existence, let’s accompany this cosmetic transformation with a short reflective rant. So far SYNDICATE as an entity in itself has been as experimental as the sound and visual content we have been pushing.

From the performance format of each individual show to the frames and cubes of our ever-evolving visual installations, we have to admit that sometimes on that particular Saturday afternoon we have no idea on how things will eventually go when the doors do open. But so far the elements have been generally kind to us.

The misses have been more like an off-beat snare in a wonky track. They don’t fall off too far and we still managed to keep the groove on. In terms of the hits, well, nothing can be perfect. So here’s to more mistimed button triggering, miscalculated set times, underestimated bass-tremors and misunderstood obnoxiousness. Perfection is death of an artist, yo.

As an experiment, let’s keep it [cue beat-repeater to drum roll the over-used word of 2010] OFF-KILTER.

So do hang around as we keep the fight. And here’s the mandatory, “WATCH THIS SPACE!”

Jeremy Boon, resident at Velvet Underground, takes us on a deep soul journey with timeless grooves and a good dose of classic disco grooves thrown in. It’s a super crafted mix that’s always on repeat on our speakers.

High in fibre, strong in bass, this mix was done on the fly, one take with no fakes. Inspired by late night cooking shows and a random article on the Art of Partying, the selection takes you through an hour of head-nods, bass nuggets and groove shifters.
