SYNDICATE ft. Teebs

Come 6 June 2014, SYNDICATE returns to 醉红楼 (Zui Hong Lou), this time to host the art and sounds of Teebs who hails all the way from Los Angeles, California. Fresh from the release of his latest album, E S T A R A, Teebs is stopping by Singapore for a one-night only live set and will also be exhibiting Ante Vos, his collection of paintings and drawings.

Born as Mtendere Mandowa in New York to Malawi and Barbados origins, Teebs is a music producer and painter. Being a key member of the Brainfeeder clan, Teebs has surged to the top of the so-called “beat scene” in recent years. Though his affiliation with Flying Lotus certainly has something to do with his ascent, it’s ultimately his music – a billowing brand of beautifully offi-kilter, hip-hop-coloured beat construction – that has set Teebs apart from what has become an increasingly crowded field of like-minded producers.

With his art, Teebs’ paintings are similar to his music production; collaging and illustrating images to create meditative and minimalist soundscapes on canvas. In Ante Vos, the artist will showcase a collection of remarqued record sleeve paintings & drawings. Teebs acquired these sleeves from found, donated and a-dollar binned records and he used them as canvasses to present a space where one could open the dialog about the value in progression from the creation of the original record to the works left by the artist.

This Teebs debut in Singapore will be supported by Fauxe and Gindara together with SYNDICATE residents, Intriguant, Kiat and Vanessa.

Another round of Beat Invitational showcase is set to take place to unearth more musical nuggets and gems. Covering a wide spectrum of sounds, the showcase will feature M X N D//K R F T, IM, Ryan Pittam, Gerald Ang and Darren Dubwise.

Intriguant – Ellipse is now online

SYNDICATE introduces its latest signing on the label with a debut release from experimental electronic producer, Intriguant. Known more for his DJing stints as Intrigue, Intriguant is the brainchild of Louis Quek and this five-track EP definitely marks his growth from a DJ to a producer/sound-designer.

The spectrum of sounds found in Ellipse is an aural smorgasbord generated from the artistʼs perceptions of spaces. Using field recordings as a starting point, he aims to render spatial cognition with his compositions.

With the opening number, “The Nostalgist”, fragmented field recordings are transposed on a minimal arrangement creating an aural space where each sound becomes metaphysical elements that float around. This sense of space is maintained throughout the release and the morose yet soothing strings of the violin lures the listener into “Chance of Coins”.

Things get more cinematic as Quek gently brings up the tempo on title track “Ellipse”. And when the beat begins to swing in, you can sense the influence of hip hop starting to creep in. With “Touch Matters” and “La Croisade”, the minimalist approach resumes and this highlights Quekʼs ability to craft each sound purposefully to sustain the sense of aural spatiality.

As a whole, Ellipse is like a soundtrack for a yet-to-be-made sci-fi movie.

Obey presents: SYNDICATE ft. Om Unit

Come 8 March 2014, SYNDICATE invades 醉红楼 (Zui Hong Lou) to play host to one of the most prominent producer/DJ from the UK at the moment – Om Unit. Fresh from his US and Australian tour, this beatmaker has been garnering global attention with his own unique blend of hip hop, drum & bass and Chicago footwork rhythms.

After years of churning hip hop releases as 2Tall in the noughties and a name under which as turntablist he emerged as a DMC finalist, Jim Coles gave himself a new identity as Om Unit in 2010. Since then Coles has spent the years refining his unique sound with releases on Goldie’s Metalheadz, dBridge’s Exit Records, Plastician’s Terrorhythm and Civil Music. With a sound that is deeply rooted in jungle and hardcore of the early 90s and as proclaimed by leading electronic music portal THUMP, Om Unit now ‘stands at the fringes of drum & bass, dubstep and future-gazing bass music’.

In between an immensely hectic touring schedule, taking in much of Europe, North America, Japan and Australia and representing for Tempo Clash alongside Blue Daisy, Kutmah, Kidkanevil and Offshore (R.I.P), the RBMA 2011 graduate has been heading up a “slow/fast” revolution and launching new sounds with his own label Cosmic Bridge, where he is responsible for introducing artists Danny Scrilla and Moresounds amongst others and has also released a series of limited edition and now highly sought “Edits” 10″s.

This Om Unit debut in Singapore will be supported by the residents from the SYNDICATE stable. The baton to pilot the aural journey for the night will be passed through the label’s latest signing, Intriguant, and bass stalwarts, Kiat and Darren Dubwise.

Prior to kicking off the party and keeping the SYNDICATE tradition for the search for new talents, another round of Beat Invitational showcase is set to take place to unearth more musical nuggets and gems all freshly made in Singapore. Covering a wide spectrum of sounds, the showcase will feature A.X.L., CrazyButCool, Derrick Motif, Pixel Apartment and Rafi Dean, who will be playing tracks from his upcoming EP.

SYNDICATE Subsessions ft. Octover and Cherry Chan

The SYNDICATE Subsessions is back for its final installation with two long-awaited performances from the SYNDICATE stable, Octover and Cherry Chan. Ever since the release of their self-titled album earlier this year, Octover has yet to play a “full-length” live set and the Subsessions stage is definitely ready for the talented duo. Gracing the same stage for the first time too, Cherry Chan is set to unleash tracks from her upcoming release.

After getting favourable features and reviews from online music giants such as Pitchfork and Yours Truly, Octover’s self-titled album has got to be the electronica release out from Singapore for 2013. Their tracks were also featured on various podcasts by acclaimed DJs worldwide such as Kevin Beadle and Lefto.

For this special performance, Octover has roped in three other musicians to perform their numbers all live without any electronic playback. The five piece line-up will feature established artists who are great Har hittar du snurrig Roulette, nervpirrande Blackjack online och strategisk Video Poker, men det som verkligen star ut fran mangden ar utbudet av Slots. musicians on their own. Kerong Chok (keyboards), Andy Yang (bass) and Adam Shah (drums) will join Jason Tan and Vanessa Fernandez on stage for this one-night only performance.

Meanwhile, Cherry Chan will be presenting an exclusive one-off live set. The first lady of SYNDICATE will be premiering forthcoming tracks from her first solo full length entitled Poncho Poncho! on the SYNDICATE imprint. This concept album soundtracks a character named Poncho and it’s innocent observations of human reactions towards hardships and life’s curve balls.

In this special performance, Cherry will be featuring a little ensemble of “Lux”, “Miro” and “Tin Tin” conducted by Natalie Soh and visual art from various mystery artists, stringing together the music story of Poncho from the dark to the quirky.

Vandetta – Vandetta is now online

We celebrate our latest release with a debut EP from Singapore’s songstress, Vanessa Fernandez, under her new solo guise as Vandetta. The self-produced, five-track EP showcases yet another different side of the multi-faceted artist, who is also part of electronic duo Octover.

This solo adventure sees Vandetta pushing the boundaries as an artist where she made her voice as the only instrument used on the record. Vocal pops, clicks and hisses are carefully crafted to form the back beats for each track. This sets the pace for her to hum pulsating basslines, whisper the melodies and wail like an angel through the various arrangements.

Minimal and misty, the EP starts out contemplatively with “Walls” & “Myne”. The sparseness of these two numbers highlights the meticulous processing of the individual elements extracted from her voice. With “Fly”, which is also the first single for the release, Vandetta amped it up a notch with a head-nodding rhythm and returned to what she does best, belting out lyrics with great gusto. The vocal experiments resume on “Number One” and “Ground Zero” as the singer explores the realm of processing pitches and textures on her voice.

A challenging project that will definitely place any singer in a vulnerable position. But the ethereal and pensive product that is Vandetta makes it sound like the challenge was turned into a wonderful journey of self-discovery.

SYNDICATE Subsessions ft. Botanicals and Intriguant

For this upcoming installation, the SYNDICATE Subsessions presents the debut of two new live electronic acts – Botanicals and Intriguant. While the names may be unfamiliar to many, the personnel behind these pseudonyms don’t need much of an introduction as they dorn new masks to push their adventure in music further.

Botanicals is a downtempo project led by one of SYNDICATE residents, Darren Dubwise. More known for his bass heavy club sets, Botanicals is set to unveil a whole different side of the DJ/producer. Taking influence from early electronica and pop hooks, this new act can be best described as fuzzy dreamy future pop. Mr. Dubwise promises to slow down the tempo and his live show will be joined by guest sessionists from the SYNDICATE stable and beyond. It will be music for dreams.

Meanwhile, Intriguant is the brainchild of Louis Quek who is more known for his hip hop & funk DJ outings as Intrigue. As Intriguant, Louis leans more towards textural sounds and syncopated beats which will be presented in a special audio-visual performance just for SYNDICATE Subsessions. He has roped in our own visualist, Brandon Tay, to design the visual journey for his set.

The Intriguant project incorporates the concept of granular synthesis and aims to engage the audience in an altered sensorial perspective through sights and sounds. This performance is set to be a preview of Intriguant’s debut EP, Ellipse, to be released in late 2013.

SYNDICATE ft. Africa Hitech

SYNDICATE feat. Africa Hitech

Come 5 October 2013, SYNDICATE returns to Home Club with a Red Bull Music Academy (RBMA) special featuring renowned electronic act, Africa Hitech. Besides gracing the stage for a special one-night only performance, the dynamic duo will also be chatting to local music enthusiasts during the exclusive and intimate RBMA Info Sessions.

Comprising longtime electronic dance music fixtures Mark Pritchard (Harmonic 313, Global Communications, Jedi Knights) and Steve Spacek, Africa Hitech has enough combined music experience to explore almost every genre of pulsing bass-driven music to perfection.

Individually, they are known for their contributions to the vast borderlands of hip hop and ambitious electronic music. They met over a decade ago, and began collaborating sporadically, before finally starting Africa Hitech. Since then, they’ve dipped their toes in everything from grime, UK funky and juke to field recordings and jazz.

Joining Africa Hitech and making his debut on the SYNDICATE stage will be local emcee/producer Mean from The.XS Collective. Fresh from dropping the In Flight EP earlier this year, Mean is a versatile artist who generates his own distinct brand of hazy hip hop with both ethereal beats and rhymes.

Completing the performance line-up for the night will be residents from the SYNDICATE stable Max Lane and Kiat, who will be throwing a special set with Vandetta. The collective’s visual specialist, Brandon Tay, will pilot the visuals throughout the night.

Another Beat Invitational showcase is set to take place, unearthing more musical nuggets and gems, all freshly made in Singapore. Covering a wide spectrum of sounds, the showcase will feature Heizenberg, .gif, Mont Berg Kingsmen, FuturaHelvetica and Vandetta, who will be playing tracks from her upcoming self-titled EP.

Prior to kicking off the party, Africa Hitech will speak to 40 members of Singapore’s music scene at the exclusive RBMA Info Session, to share insights from their dynamic musical careers, as well as their tenure at Warp Records. The duo will share anecdotes of their first meeting as fellow lecturers at the 2007 RBMA in Toronto, Canada, and how that progressed to the formation of their groundbreaking partnership.

SYNDICATE Subsessions ft. Pleasantry x Fauxe and Weish

The SYNDICATE Subsessions continues to push the boundaries and for this installment it presents the lush sonic offerings by Pleasantry, Fauxe and Weish. For the first time ever, the Subsessions stage plays host to a collaborative set where Singapore’s current indie darlings, Pleasantry, shares the spotlight with emerging electronic producer, Fauxe.

Meanwhile, Weish will also helm the stage with her one-woman live-looping performance.

Formed in late 2010, Pleasantry crafts and carves music out of each member’s disparate listening background. The end result is a plush and infectious bunch of songs coupled with live performances of great musicality.

These traits that defined Pleasantry will be set against the textural electronic approach of Fauxe and vice versa. Upon listening to the Fauxe remix of a Pleasantry track, “Window Gazer”, the fit seems perfect for the collaboration to take place live on a proper stage.

Weish is a voice of displacement, suspended between talk and silence, comedy and despair, guilt and ignorance, momentum and ennui, originality and cliché. Armed with her looper pedal and a treasury of cherished collaborations, Weish has grown significantly in writing and performance over the past year.

The two performances will be accompanied with live visuals from guest visual artist, Jun, who had previously collaborated with the likes of Monster Cat and The B Quartet.

Max Lane – BRIGHT//SHINE is now online

This sixth offering from the SYNDICATE imprint, BRIGHT//SHINE, marks the long awaited release by Singaporean producer, Max Lane. The four-track EP compiles the ever-experimenting beatmaker’s adventure into the sonic realm of head-nodding rhythms. From start to end, Max Lane manages to present his own blend of clunky yet intricate beats with pulsating basslines and modulating synth melodies.

Picking up from where he left off from his self-released The Mim Project EP (2009), Max Lane extends his homage to the late Javanese literary great, Pramoedya Ananta Toer. An audio reading excerpt from Pramoedya’s This Earth of Mankind is featured in the opening track, ‘Don’t Ask My Name”. This nod to the realm of Southeast Asian literature can be found again in the ‘Voodoo Martyr’ where you will find the processed & chopped-up voice of Singapore’s left-field icon, X’Ho, reading out Alfian Saat’s “Singapore You’re Not My Country”.

Definitely a release that is craft out with many layers, you have to listen to BRIGHT//SHINE over and over again to peel them off one at a time.
